I highly encourage everyone to dive into a book that can help you develop. If you don’t like to read, at least give the audiobook version a listen. Of course, not every book/audiobook is going to resonate and stick with you. But here are a few books that have been monumental in shaping my overall viewpoint on a lot of different areas.
If you’re a practical person, Extreme Ownership is an excellent book. It frames leadership into a very simple system with principles that anybody will be able to understand. I think it’s really a book geared more towards guys because it contains a lot of war stories (aside from the usual business stories). If you’re into that sort of thing, it’s a great read.
I just recently read through the next book on my list,Leadership and Self Deception , because it was recommended to me by a friend. This is one of those books that explains business concepts with parallel personal stories. It’s an easy read, too, but it opened me up to the idea of how powerful our minds can be—we can deceive ourselves into thinking so many things. We justify our actions so easily in our minds, without even being consciously aware that we’re doing so. This is a book that teaches the ability to see others differently, without deception.
My last book recommendation is The New One Minute Manager. It’s an updated and revised book based on the original version (The One Minute Manager), which has been around for many years. Every business needs a leader, but at the end of they day, they also need a manager. This particular book really hones in on the management side of things and simplifies management down to three concepts: set goals that align with the vision of the company, provide redirects when necessary, and provide praise when someone does a task correctly. These are simple principles to live by as a manager, and they are especially helpful for new managers who want to begin with some sort of process.
