It’s amazing how quickly summertime approaches. For those of us who live near Franklin County and Roanoke County, we can sometimes take for granted how awesome our area is, especially for anyone who likes being outdoors. There’s just tons of fun stuff to do here.
We recently took a couple of days and hung out around our area, simply because we rarely take the time to do that. When we think about family vacations, it’s usually something involving going to the beach or traveling out of town. I would encourage people in our area to also consider staying close to home and maybe planning some day trips.
The Blue Ridge Mountains aren’t too far away if you like hiking. In Roanoke there’s the Greenway, which is great for walking and biking. Then we have the Roanoke River and the James River, which is awesome for any type of kayaking or canoeing. There’s just a tremendous amount of activities when it comes to the outdoors.
There are many fun things for kids to enjoy in the Roanoke Valley too, whether it’s something water-related at Splash Valley or the Aquatic Center or something at one of the many indoor centers. Just in case the weather isn’t suitable for an outdoor activity, we have some great alternatives.
I think the most important thing you can give to a family is your time. There are so many occasions when I’ve been guilty of saying we have to do a specific activity when the most significant thing is probably that we’re able to spend time together.
