How Clogged Drains Occur

Drains and traps (the pipes typically found under sinks) are the most important part of your plumbing system. All plumbing fixtures, including sinks, tubs, and toilets, are equipped with traps. Because of its shape, the trap retains a small amount of water after the fixture’s use. This creates a seal that prevents sewer gas from entering your house – gas that can cause health issues. A malfunctioning drain can create a serious health concern.

Drain clogs occur for many reasons. General annoyance clogs involve large objects such as wads of paper, small toys, or large clumps of hair that block the drain. These can happen when proper drain protection is not used or when a kid decides to shove something in the pipe.

While these clogs can often be cleared with a plunger or auger, some clogs occur farther into your system and build up slowly over time. As soap scum or mineral buildup from water accumulates, space through your pipes becomes increasingly narrow. When this happens, almost anything can cause a clog. If nothing else, this type of clog slows the flow of water and creates slow-flowing drains. It’s a lot like our own arteries – if they’re clogged, you run the risk of future health complications. When clogs like this occur, it’s time to take action.

Don’t Risk Making it Worse.

Being handy around the house is great, but water damage can cost thousands of dollars. Let Wisler Plumbing take the risk. They’re licensed, bonded, and insured.

Wisler Plumbing uses special video cameras to view your pipes and identify potential problems. Knowing what they’re up against reduces the risk of causing damage.

Plungers: Use Caution.

A plunger works well for the occasional soft clog, but if you’re using a plunger multiple times a month, you’ve got a problem.

Plungers are not long-term fixes. If you don’t tackle the underlying issue, there’s a good chance you’ll going to have an even bigger problem later.

Drano: Not Recommended.

Commercially available drain cleaners such as Drano are not recommended. They’re made of  extremely harsh chemicals that can potentially be unsafe – harming people, pets, and the plumbing itself.

Yes, chemical-based drain cleaners can be nice. They’re a convenient do-it-yourself option. While they do have applications (like for clearing hair stuck in a tub drain), it’s important that all proper precautions are taken. Just as you wouldn’t simply dump bleach into the laundry without following the indications, you shouldn’t use a commercial drain cleaner unless you know the proper safety and usage instructions.

HINT: Never pour Drano or chemical-based cleaners into an area with standing water. You create the potential of a hazardous mess that requires special cleaning procedures—something you likely don’t have time to deal with.

I would like to express our appreciation for the outstanding job Austin performed at our house on Thursday September 6th. He was very professional and did an excellent job of identifying the problem with the clogged floor drain for our HVAC condensation lines.

Although this job looked like it was turning from a simple one into a major one, Austin was able to identify the end of the pipe and remove the obstruction. His hard work saved us from a major job that would have disturbed a large area of landscaping. Please ensure Austin’s supervisor knows how much my wife and I appreciate Austin’s good work.

Our experience with your company and each of your employees was excellent. We will definitely use your company when we have plumbing needs and recommend you to our friends.
